Anna Maria Island
Anna Maria Island is seven miles long and less than a mile wide strip, laid-back and natural which is surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico, the Intracoastal Waterway and Tampa Bay. The island is just an easy one hour drive coming from Tampa. It was discovered by the local Timucan and Caloosan Native American tribe way back decades ago and was later expedited by Spanish explorers Hernando de Soto who entered north of Anna Maria Island in May 1539.
In the beginning of the 20th Century, Tampa Mayor Madison Post first settled in the island and the name was derived from his wife’s name Maria and his sister-in-law named Anna. The settlement was abruptly dominated by nautical types after the early settlement of fishermen from Cuba. In 1892, George Emerson Bean was the initial permanent resident but the ownership of his land was transferred to his son George Wilhelm Bean. Charles Roser, a filthy rich real estate developer coming from St. Petersburg partnered with George Wilhelm Bean to establish the Anna Maria Beach Company, laying out streets, creating sidewalks and houses with water system. More people started visiting the island and drew businessmen to invest on properties after the bridge was finished in 1922.
Years later, the region was developed and now famous for its wildlife, attracting scientists involved in marine biology. Strict policies govern the type of buildings as they don’t allow establishments over three stories, so high rise buildings won’t be evident. Food chains are also not present; only local restaurants offering exceptional food. Visitors would consider this place reminiscent of Florida in the early times, although modern amenities improve the old charm for a perfect mix of old and new.
A visit to Anna Maria Island is a genuine getaway with the fine white sandy beaches. The Bungalow Beach Resort, a revitalized 1930s era island-style place located within the white sand dunes, offers vacationers an experience to marvel at the gulf-front accommodations with the view of sea oats and coconut palm trees swaying with the see wind. Visitors enjoy a perfect haven out of the city life since this island provides also a stunning view of the sunset. The Sandbar is also a cool place to hangout wherein you get to enjoy the water view, while enjoying the food and drinks they provide at reasonable prices.
