Longboat Key is a 12 mile barrier island located south of Anna Maria Island, between the Gulf of Mexico and Sarasota Bay. Also situated north of the captivating Lido Key, Longboat Key town is divided between Sarasota and Manatee counties. For hundreds of years, Longboat Key had been home to the Timucuan and Caloosa Indians. In the early 1900s, houses were built on the northern end of Longboat Key, once known as Longbeach. In 1920, John Ringling purchased hundreds of acres on the south end of Longboat Key and planted Australian pine trees along Gulf of Mexico Drive (formerly known as Ringling Boulevard) till the other end of the island.
The Ritz-Carlton Hotel was also established on New Pass in 1926 but was never launched so it was demolished in 1962 when Arvida purchased the land. Gates blocked Gulf of Mexico Drive during the World War II since target practice was held at Longboat Key. The town was integrated on Nov. 14, 1955 and was developed gradually until the 1960s and 70s. Longboat Key Towers was the initial condo built and in the 1970s, zoning was strict as well as approval of town water and sewage system by the Town Commissions. Since then, almost all acre of land was utilized and developed so zoning became tighter.
