Plant City Florida

Plant City belongs to northeastern Hillsborough County Florida, located about midway between Brandon and Lakeland along Interstate 4.

Plant City’s original name was Ichepucksassa after the Indian village that once inhabited the region. Its name caused so much confusion that the city was renamed “Cork”, after the postmaster’s Irish hometown. It was finally named “Plant City” in commemoration of Henry B. Plant who developed his railroad, which meaningfully boosted the trade business in this predominant agricultural community by incorporating it with the South Florida Railroad.

The City is popularly known as the winter strawberry capital of the world and is host to the annual Florida Strawberry Festival, normally in February or early March which is attended by people all over the world. Wishnatzki Farms, the largest strawberry producer in Florida, has a major role in Plant City popularity.

Plant City as a whole is noted for its sandy, infertile soils. However, in and around the city, high organic matter content and scattered phosphate nodules make the soils more fertile than typical for the Southern Flatwoods ecological community. With its humid subtropical climate, hot summers and warm dry winters, it is not truly to be considered a tropical climate.
