Downtown St. Petersburg is quite famous for its waterfront park system, closeness to the city’s commercial district, distinct architecture, cultural heart and historical background as a walkable urban district. It is the Central Business District which includes high rises for offices such as the One Progress Plaza. In 1924, the St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club was established and became well-known as the “World’s Largest Shuffleboard Club” with more than 5,000 members in the 50s and 60s era featuring 110 courts.

Also headquartered in the downtown part is the Tampa Bay Times newspaper and its owner, Poynter Institute, is sited in 3rd Street South. Among the cultural venues included in downtown are the Mahaffey Theater complex, Haslam’s Bookstore, the Morean Arts Center, The Coliseum, lots of art galleries, Jannus Live and Palladium Theatre.

St. Pete Downtown hosts various festivals outdoors all throughout the year and has been considered to be one of the best in the Southern part of Florida. Various museums popular in downtown have garnered notable compliments such as the Chihuly Collection introduced by the Morean Arts Center, the Salvador Dali Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, the St. Petersburg Museum of History, the Florida International Museum, and the Florida Holocaust Museum.

The city is connected via the Looper Trolley which is accessible when you want to tour the place. Beaches are just 10miles nearby and half a mile close is the St. Petersburg Pier, a major tourist attraction offering lots of happenings. The city also features the University of South Florida St. Petersburg and a downtown branch of St. Petersburg College. The downtown area also includes various waterfront or lakefront parks such as the Straub Park which is nearly a half mile long, and is home of the St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Arts. Vinoy Park holds music festivals such as the Warped Tour. At North part of Downtown St. Petersburg, you can find the historic Old Northeast and Snell Isle which are both themed like Mediterranean style featuring waterfront homes, recreational areas and parks.

Home of the Major League Baseball’s Tampa Bay Rays is Tropicana Field which is situated in the western part of downtown and Tampa Bay Rowdies who are located downtown at Al Lang Stadium. Becoming one of the largest kiteboarding destinations in Florida, popular now are the areas of Pass-a-Grill, Fort De Sotor Park and Ten-Cent.
